“Banks see spike in stick-ups”
►What I read today on the newspaper was that Banks in San Diego County are increasingly being targeted by desperate criminals who have little aversion to risk. The faltering economy and more typical factors – a constant need to feed drug habits and a handful of repeat offenders – are driving increases not seen in years, law enforcement experts said. There were 171 bank robberies in the county last year, a five-year high and a 20 percent jump from 2006, according to FBI statistics. The pace has picked up even more this year. Through Saturday, there were 108 bank robberies in the county, compared with 71 during the same period last year and 57 in 2006.
►I don’t agree because I think the bank robberies aren't ADECUATE.
►I also don’t agree because this was just on ANNUAL period.
►I don’t agree because that is not a good ATTRIBUTE.
►I think the most interesting fact is that some of the robberies were successful.

Today in the union tribune, I read that Gas prices declined for the 11th straight day on Monday, falling to a level not seen since May, according to a nationwide survey of filling station credit card swipes. Other fuel prices also continued to fall. The price of regular unleaded gasoline at the pump slipped 1.2 cents to $3.958 a gallon on average, a daily survey from motorist advocacy group AAA revealed. A second report from Lundberg Survey, Inc. showed that gasoline prices had slipped 12 cents over the past two weeks to an average of $3.9959 a gallon. High fuel prices have strained on American consumers and businesses, making transportation and shipping more expensive. Average gasoline prices first crossed the $4 mark on June 7 when they hit $4.005 a gallon, according to the AAA survey. Prices rose to $3.952 a gallon on May 29 and continued to trend upward to a record high of $4.114 on July 16. Prices stayed there for two days before beginning their retreat, following a double-digit decline in oil as investors worried that the high cost of fuel was leading to a slowdown in demand. High fuel prices have caused many drivers, particularly those in states with strong agricultural industries, to switch to ethanol as their fuel of choice.

IN LINCOLN, Rhode Island (AP) -- Authorities charged a man Sunday with killing his parents with a garden hoe and burying their bodies in their backyard cesspool.

Marian Soares and husband James Soares Sr. in an undated photograph.

James A. Soares, 24, of Warren, Rhode Island, did not enter a plea when prosecutors arraigned him at the state police barracks in Lincoln with two counts of murder in the deaths of James A. Soares Sr., 60, and Marian Soares, 53.
He was being held overnight and was to be formally arraigned in district court Monday. A spokesman for the state police did not know whether Soares had a lawyer.
Police would not comment on a motive but said they believe Soares attacked and killed his parents July 9 with a heavy digging tool known as a grub hoe. Police said he then dragged their bodies into an in-ground cesspool at the family's home in Warren, a small town southeast of Providence. Soares lived with his parents.
"It's incomprehensible to think that someone could kill someone that brought them into the world," police Maj. Steven O'Donnell said.
The couple were reported missing July 15 after they didn't show up for a family reunion.
On Saturday, police used a backhoe to dig up the Soares' backyard and found the bodies. O'Donnell said the grub hoe was found under the senior Soares' body.
Police said the younger Soares was the prime suspect early in the investigation, based on police interviews. He was taken into custody Friday.
Police would not comment on whether Soares confessed and said the investigation was continuing.
In 2002, the elder Soares pleaded guilty to a federal charge of being a felon in possession of firearms. He was sentenced to probation and home confinement.

On CNN website today I read about these three white guys that got charged for beating illegal immigrants. fatal beating of an illegal Mexican immigrant in a small northeast Pennsylvania coal town. Brandon J. Piekarsky, 16, and Colin J. Walsh, 17, were charged as adults with homicide and ethnic intimidation in the July 12 attack on Luis Ramirez. A third teen, Derrick M. Donchak, 18, was charged with aggravated assault, ethnic intimidation and other offenses. All are from Shenandoah, where the attack occurred. Ramirez, 25, was beaten to death after an argument with a group of youths that police said included high school football players. Authorities could not immediately say whether any of the suspects were members of the team, but they confirmed that all three used ethnic slurs during the fight. I think that it wasn’t right to beat that guy to death. Racism is a big problem in our society today and some how I think that needs to change.
